4 labour market trends this year
Every year brings new labour market trends. In 2025, they will reflect the global economic, technological and social transformations. Although the pandemic is now behind us, it has left deep marks on the way we work and communicate. New technologies, artificial intelligence, remote working and the growing importance of mental health are influencing the formation of new trends in business. In this article, we look at four key labour market trends that will define the shape of the employment market in 2025.
1. Work from office
A KPMG survey of global CEOs’ predictions shows that 83% of them believe that in 3 years we will be working entirely from the office again. However, the change is not expected to go without problems. Many employees are already used to the convenience and flexibility of working from home. This will make the return to cubicles fraught with frustration and challenges. Even big companies like Google, Meta, Apple and Amazon have already faced resistance from their workers when trying to introduce more days at the office. However, the trend is for companies to increasingly push for a move away from telecommuting models.
2. Prioritization of skills
Skills-based hiring is becoming increasingly common. Employers are now focusing on a candidate’s specific abilities instead of traditional requirements such as diplomas, degrees or previous work experience.
According to data from Indeed Hiring Lab, as of January 2024, 52% of job postings on Indeed’s U.S. platform do not list any formal education requirements.
ADP research shows that 94% of organizations that have hired employees based on skills believe this method is more successful than the usual approach of selecting by documents and certifications.
3. Development of Artificial Intelligence
With the constant development of technology, the integration of artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly important for future success. It is no coincidence that the United States, Europe and China are constantly investing and competing in its development. ADP’s research shows that over 50% of employers are running targeted employee programs to increase AI-related skills.
4. Hybrid positions
Trends are for increasing demand for positions in areas that require practical and technical skills. This is changing traditional perceptions of work and opening up new career opportunities in a variety of industries. These changes highlight the need for new approaches in education and vocational training.
The year 2025 will be a period of transition. Efficiency and sustainability will depend on the ability of all market actors to adapt and innovate. It is important for employers and employees to be ready for these 4 labour market trends by investing in skills and learning
