249 power generation projects funded under the National Recovery and Sustainability Plan

The evaluation of the investment proposals received under the procedure “Support for new renewable electricity generation and storage capacities with an installed capacity of 200 kW to 2 MW” (Call 1) and the procedure “Support for new renewable electricity generation and storage capacities with an installed capacity of more than 200 kW” (Call 2) has been successfully completed. 249 projects have been approved for a total value of nearly BGN 526 million, the Ministry of Energy reports. The projects are funded under the National Recovery and Sustainability Plan.

249 projects have been approved for a total value of nearly BGN 526 million, the Ministry of Energy reports. The projects are funded under the National Recovery and Sustainability Plan.

The activities under the National Recovery and Sustainability Plan of the Republic of Bulgaria under the Low Carbon Economy component cover the following areas:

  • supporting new renewable electricity generation and storage capacity;
  • renewable energy support for households
  • support for energy efficient street lighting systems;
  • support for the development and use of geothermal energy;
  • green hydrogen production and the National Decarbonisation Fund.

According to the information published by the Ministry, a total of 327 proposals were received under Call 1, of which 267 were shortlisted. The envisaged financial resources under the procedure amount to BGN 107 570 650, which allows financing 200 projects with a total value of nearly BGN 107 million. The projects foresee the installation of 435 MW of renewable generation capacity and 176 MW of local electricity storage facilities. The projects for which there are currently insufficient financial resources – 67 in total – are included in a list of reserve proposals with a total value of just over BGN 44 million.

A total of 70 proposals were received under Call 2. Only 5 of them were not admitted. The financial resources available under the procedure amount to BGN 427 544 438, which allows the financing of 49 projects with a total value of almost BGN 419 million. During their implementation, 2660 MW of renewable generation capacity and 1000 MW of local electricity storage facilities will be installed. The projects for which there are currently insufficient financial resources – 16 in total – are included in the list of reserve proposals with a total value of nearly BGN 43 million.

The deadline for the implementation of the projects is 31 March 2026.

“Generating electricity from renewable sources as well as ensuring sufficient electricity storage capacity is key in terms of meeting the challenges of the Green Deal,” Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov stressed. According to the Minister, investments in technologies for decarbonised electricity generation are the way forward for the development of a modern energy sector. The completed evaluation of the proposals to be funded under the NREAP is an important step towards achieving the country’s key priorities in the energy sector – reducing carbon emissions and successfully integrating renewable energy generation capacity into the grid while ensuring the security and stability of the electricity system.

The main objective of the investment is to contribute to increasing the share of clean energy in Bulgaria’s energy mix on the path towards climate neutrality.
