The cars of the future and how they will change the economy

What will the cars of the future look like? This is a question that has been asked time and time again. But looking at the trends in recent years, Ignition in Action believe a reliable prediction can be made. The cars of the future will bring a range of benefits to society: less pollution, greater safety, more leisure and services. Of course, many challenges lie ahead – technological, industrial and legislative – but the transition is already underway and the process will accelerate in the coming years. So, let’s see what cars await us:

1. Electrical

Electric cars are becoming more and more popular. When the technology was first introduced, experts thought it would only be used for specific applications (e.g. public transport). Overcoming predictions, electric cars are slowly becoming a must-have in all market segments. Previous obstacles such as short battery life, insufficient charging stations or road characteristics are becoming increasingly irrelevant. The trend is also reinforced by the environmental aspect. Electric cars will significantly reduce pollution and make road transport more efficient, economical and sustainable.

2. Autonomous

This development will be in stages: we will start without legs, then we will manage without arms and finally without eyes” – Pascal Briere, Director of Innovation at French technology company Capemini.

Cruise control has been available for several years, allowing drivers to set the desired speed and remove their feet from the pedals. In addition, some cars now offer driver assistance technologies that allow hands to be freed from the wheel in certain situations, such as in traffic jams or when parking. The next step is 100% autonomy. Engineers are working on replacing human vision with multiple cameras, sensors and a laser. These will reproduce the environment in 3D and allow the car to make autonomous navigation decisions. After the concept was popularised by Google with its famous autonomous car, most manufacturers have started looking at autonomy and are currently conducting major road tests.

3. Related

“Cars are becoming a separate place for service consumption,” says Pascal Briere. Journeys that take a few hours will become a chance to answer your email, watch the latest movie or Skype with a friend on the other side of the world. But for cars to be fully autonomous, they will need to be able to exchange a variety of information with the outside world. Traffic, weather, vehicle status, availability of service stations, accidents and more will be monitored. Eventually, through various sensors, the car will not only be able to communicate with other vehicles, but also with the infrastructure (roads, buildings, etc.).

4. With a completely new architecture

It is inevitable to build a completely new architecture that combines all innovations. On the one hand, the car body is gradually changing to incorporate new technologies, such as lightweight composites and 3D printing. On the other hand, the integration and connection of multiple smart devices (computers, cameras, infotainment systems, etc.) is important to ensure the connectivity and range of the vehicle.

The car of the future will be electric, autonomous, connected and with a completely new architecture. Many players are embarking on this adventure: car manufacturers, equipment suppliers, telecom operators, web giants and others. This poses a challenge for the automotive industry, which must adapt to new technologies and changing market demands.
